When you're credentialed through these third party platforms, you're not technically on the insurance panel yourself. They are. You're practicing under their umbrella.

That means if you ever choose to leave these companies or if they change their structure or if they shut down, you lose your access to those panels overnight. And that's why I strongly recommend you take the extra step to credential directly with the insurance companies as well. Even if you're using Alamo or BetterHelp to get started, begin your own credentialing process on the side right away. And this creates a safety net and gives you full control over your insurance contracts and reimbursement rates.

Now, according to the American Psychological Association, many therapists are unaware that contracts that these networks often don't transfer and they don't follow you once you leave. You may lose not only the contract, but also visibility on directories and claim access. But by credentialing yourself, you're building long-term sustainability into your practice. The goal here is independence and flexibility. And if you're only credentialed through a network, you may be limiting yourself down the road. But when you're paneled, you're positioning yourself to keep your patients and to keep your revenue consistent, even if you decide to shift your business model later on.
