What Search Engines Look For

May 13, 2024

Hi, this is Dave Kats with Therapist Consultants, and I have a tip for you. Let's talk about the internet a little bit again. How do you get seen on the internet? Well, the way you get seen on the internet is do what the search engines want you to do. The search engines like Google or Bing or Yelp or Yahoo. Here's what they want.

First of all, they want to see that you have a pervasive presence, that you're all over the internet. You know, we have people who used to come into our office and we would say to them, where did you hear about us? And they'd say, well, on the internet.  And they'd say, well, specifically, where do you see us on the internet? They say, oh, you're all over the internet. And that's exactly what I want them to say about you, to be all over the internet. You know, you can join people like Psychology Day, referral sites like Psychology Day. Well, why don't you join a few more too? Why don't you do goodtherapy.org, or Theravive, or somebody like that.

Now, you may say, well, I tried that once, I didn't get any referrals for six months. No, but it helped you have a pervasive presence.  So, pervasive presence, get on Google, Bing, Yelp, Yahoo. Get on Instagram, get on Facebook, do advertisements, do posts, get your website updated, get blogs on your website, and pretty soon you'll see that you have a pervasive presence. That's one of the things they want.   T

he next thing they want is accurate information. Make sure that everywhere you're listed on the internet has the same information. If you list yourself as 1st and Main one time, and 100 Main next time, they see that it's two different addresses. So make sure everything is the same. Go through and look at, especially the big four, Google, Bing, Yelp, Yahoo and make sure that your information, your name, address, phone number, is the same on all of them.

The third thing they need to look at is signs of life. They need to see that you're alive. So what do you do to do that? Well, start putting posts on Facebook. Start putting posts on Instagram.  Start putting a blog on your website and answer people when they respond to your blog on the website and they'll see that you have activity and they will rate you higher.

And then the last thing that Google looks for is how long people stay on your website. So if people go to your website, the average time they stay is 20 seconds. But if you have tips, if you have a little test they can take. If you have frequently asked questions, FAQs, they look at that a lot of times, they stay on your website longer, and when they stay on your website longer, then Google thinks they like you and they rate you higher.

So right now, during this week, why don't you concentrate on getting a pervasive presence all over the internet. You do it once, maybe it's gonna take you two or three, four hours, but you'll have it then forever. So think about it, for you to get shown on Google, you have to do what Google likes you to do, and we just talked about those things, you do them and you'll be successful.
