Doing Exit Evaluations
Hi. I’m Linda Kats with Therapist Consultants and I’ve got a tip for you.
I want to talk to you for just a minute about exit evaluations. Exit evaluations may seem like an overkill, especially to those of us that have never thought about them before or just don’t give them much credit, we figure “hey, people got their help, they’re gone and they got better, that’s all that matters.”
When counseling treatment is terminating, making the experience of what the patient received that you can learn from and get help from yourself is something that you’ll get from an exit evaluation. How many times have you thought about, “wow, I would like to be able to give a little bit of feedback on the experience that I just had.”
Now granted we seem to think that more often whenever it’s an experience that we wish we hadn’t had but, there are times when we have the experience that we would like to tell somebody that that was really awesome or that they did a good job. And we all need to have that opportunity. An exit evaluation will provide that for you and for your patient.

What you hope to gain from an exit evaluation is how the patient felt during treatment; if they felt supported during their treatment and the things that they thought were positive. You know, if you’re concerned and don’t want to hear from your patients, because you feel you’re doing a good enough job, you may want to reconsider that perspective. One of the things that will happen with exit evaluations is you’ll get a better indicator of how the patient really did during therapy and that will tell you too, “are they going to refer to you?”.
So go ahead and consider doing an exit evaluation. Therapist Consultant clients can get those off of our website, copy them, edit them, whatever you need to do and start using them today.
